Norwegian archivists visit Aberdeen

A 20-strong party of Norwegian archivists will be welcomed to King’s College campus today (Thursday, May 29).

The archivists, from the Norwegian State Archives in Stavanger, will discuss collaborative projects involving the oil and gas industry with members of the University of Aberdeen's Special Libraries and Archives team.

Earlier this year, Aberdeen staff worked closely with their Norwegian counterparts to curate an exhibition at Marischal Museum on the Frigg oil field – a groundbreaking project during the '70s oil boom.

The Frigg exhibition is part of a wider new initiative called Capturing the Energy, a partnership between industry, government and heritage organisations to create an ongoing record of the achievements of the UK's offshore oil and gas history.

Siobhan Convery, the University Archivist, said "We are delighted to be welcoming such a large group of colleagues from across the North Sea and expect it to be a fruitful visit. Strong links already exist between Stavanger and Aberdeen and this visit emphasises the University's increasing investment in developing archives of the offshore oil and gas industry."

During their visit to Aberdeen, the Stavanger group will also learn about the University's ambitious plans for a new library and special collections centre.

Siobhan added: "There is a very strong interest in the library project and the kind of opportunities for fresh collaborations that it will offer."

An exhibition on the Frigg project is running at Marischal Museum until 27 June. A virtual version can be viewed here: www.abdn.ac.uk/historic/friggexhibition.
