University staff don denim to raise thousands for local charities

Jeans will be the uniform today (Friday 25 April) for staff at the University of Aberdeen – and it’s all in aid of charity!

Staff will don their denims for the second annual Jeans in the 'Deen day, which aims to raise thousands of pounds for a host of local charities.

Organised by the Student Charities campaign, the event takes place ahead of the celebrated Student Torcher Parade and marks the end of the Charities Fortnight.

Shannon Tubby, Events and Fundraising Coordinator, Aberdeen University Students' Association says of the event: "The idea of Jeans in the 'Deen day is the same as the "Jeans for Genes" day where all staff members are encouraged to put on their jeans to work, with the condition that a donation to the Charities Campaign is made.

The goal for this year's Student Charities Campaign is to raise at least £100,000 which will be donated to 80 worthy Aberdeen and Grampian-based charities including Aberdeen Cyrenians, UCAN Grampian, Friends of Anchor and the University's research into breast cancer.

It is hoped the support of staff from across the University will enable the campaign to reach its target as Shannon continues: "We expect to see an overwhelming number of staffed decked out in denim in support of the occasion.  Support has already been generated in advance of the day, from across the Universities' Colleges and student volunteers will be going around campus today collecting donations.

"Raising valuable funds for these extremely commendable local charities is our objective, and we are confident that this year's Jeans for 'Deen day will be a hugely successful event."

The annual Student Torcher Parade takes place on Saturday (26 April) at 7.30 pm.  The parade will make its way from Marischal College down Upperkirkgate, Schoolhill, Rosemount Viaduct and Skene Street to Queen's Cross.  At this halfway point, the torches are lit before continuing down Albyn Place and Union Street back to Broad Street.
