University of Aberdeen welcomes £84.4M SFC funding

The University of Aberdeen welcomes the announcement by the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) that the Institution is to receive more than £84.4million for the 2008/09 academic year – a 4.4% increase over last year - towards its teaching and research activities.

The funding is part of the SFC's £1billion allocation for teaching, research and capital funding in 19 universities across Scotland.

Professor Stephen Logan, the University's Senior Vice-Principal, is extremely pleased that Aberdeen has been so well supported in this latest funding round. Following the announcement, he said: "We welcome this news of additional investment in Scottish universities.  This is a boost to all of our high quality activities and it will benefit our teaching and learning and enhance our ability to support international quality research.

"We particularly welcome our 10.4% increase in research funding which clearly demonstrates that the quality of research at the University of Aberdeen is being recognised in the best possible way.

"This will help us maintain and build on the tremendous progress we have made in recent years at the University of Aberdeen. This is an exceptionally exciting time for us, as we continue to attract academics from the world's leading universities - our research is increasingly making the headlines not only here but throughout the world, our students are benefiting from improved facilities and support, and we have embarked on an ambitious programme of capital development on our campuses at Old Aberdeen and Foresterhill. Meanwhile our partnerships with business and other organisations are bringing exciting new developments to this area, and the packed cultural programme we offer our local communities is busier than ever.

"This is all helping us achieve our goal of being rated as one of top one hundred universities in the world."
