Scotland’s top EU official visits Aberdeen

The Scottish Government’s top official in Brussels will give a public lecture at the University of Aberdeen on Friday, March 14.

Michael Aron, Head of the Scottish Government's EU Office, will give a lecture entitled 'Scotland in Europe'. It will take place in the Cruickshank Lecture Theatre, G08 at 10am.

Mr Aron previously accepted an invitation to speak at the University last year following a leaked government report claiming Scotland had been ignored by Whitehall officials in key European negotiations.

The 2007 draft paper, which was produced by Mr Aron and leaked by the SNP in the lead up to the Scottish Elections, said UK ministers demonstrated a "misunderstanding and ignorance" of the devolution settlement.

"This lecture follows the election of an SNP Government in Scotland, providing an excellent chance to compare intergovernmental relations under a different party of government," said Dr Paul Cairney, who organised Mr Aron's visit as part of the honours course he runs on Scottish Politics.

"We're delighted once again to welcome Michael Aron to Aberdeen for what promises to be an insightful lecture at a time of significant change for Scottish politics."

Dr Cairney's course contains a number of guest speakers, as well as a visit to the Scottish Parliament to help students engage with the practical side of politics.

Those keen to attend the lecture are asked to confirm their attendance by emailing Dr Cairney at href="mailto:paul.cairney@abdn.ac.uk" title="mailto:paul.cairney@abdn.ac.uk">paul.cairney@abdn.ac.uk.
