An Aberdeen opera group will give two performances this weekend – 40 years after singing their last note.
The University of Aberdeen's Opera Group has recently been revived under new director Dr Tim Tricker, a Teaching Fellow in the School of Language and Literature and conductor Alistair Macdonald from the University's Music department.
The original group are thought to have last graced the Aberdeen stage in 1968, disbanding after a performance of Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.
Fittingly, the group will now give two performances of a semi-staged version of the Baroque opera on Saturday, March 1 (at 1.15pm and 7.45pm) at Cowdray Hall.
Paul Tierney will play Trojan refugee Aeneas while Alexandra Stacey takes the role of Dido, the legendary Queen of Carthage.
Dr Paul Mealor, University Concerts Co-ordinator, said: "It's marvellous to see the Opera Group back up and running again after such a long leave of absence, and it's testament to their resurgence that they've seen fit to again tackle such an amazing work in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas."
Purcell's story tells of Aeneas and his crew's shipwreck in Carthage and how he falls in love with the Queen. Aeneas, though, must soon leave for Rome but Dido cannot live without him.
