Student solicitors score with new tournament

A new football tournament has been created by student lawyers studying at the University of Aberdeen.

The Mackinnons Cup, an inter-faculty competition, will see teams from across the University battle it out for sporting glory in March.

The tournament was born when Drew McKinney, who is currently completing his Diploma in Legal Practice at Aberdeen's Law School, decided to create a side to bring his fellow students closer together.

"I got the idea of forming a team as I felt that a lot of the lads may feel isolated coming to Aberdeen from other parts of Scotland and not knowing a lot of folk," explained Drew.

"My plan was to bring people together from various backgrounds and integrate them in a football team, thus building good communication skills and teamwork, something they will all require in their working lives.

"It's also something for us all to do outside the diploma course and has helped install a determination and motivation in everyone involved."

Games with other University department teams followed and soon gave Drew the notion for a proper tournament to give his band of legal hotshots something to aim for.

Sponsorship was secured from Mackinnons law firm in Aberdeen and new teamkits, a trophy and medals were bought.

"The tournament is just about finalised and will take place in the month of March with six teams in total, all from schools within the University," said Drew, who recently took his team to Pittodrie Stadium to meet some Dons' favourites. "The final will be played on a Sunday and an Aberdeen FC representative will be there to present the trophy and the medals to the finalists."

The teams taking part are Diploma in Legal Practice, the Medics, the Geology dept, the LLB undergraduates, the Officers Training Core, and the Engineering School.

Last Friday, as preparation for the tournament, Drew's side played Edinburgh University Diploma Law team, an established outfit that included members of the Edinburgh University side which played in this year's Scottish Cup. The Aberdeen men won 5-1 after being 1-0 down.

Added Drew: "I am proud of these lads as they are so determined, committed and hard working. It is a real joy to work with them; not only are we part of a team, we are also good friends, who will remain so for several years to come.

"I'm delighted to have been able to put together the tournament and I hope that it will continue for many years to come."
