Cancer expert gives insight into disease

A leading cancer researcher will give an insight into the disease at a TechFest talk taking place tonight (Wednesday, September 19).

Dr Andy Schofield, a breast cancer researcher at the University of Aberdeen, will give a talk entitled Understanding Cancer: Today's Research, Tomorrow's Cures.

His lecture will look at how and why we get cancer and whether genes or our environment could be to blame.

Dr Schofield will describe the science behind this disease and the changes that have to occur in a normal cell to make it cancerous.

He will also explain that if we can understand more about cancer, treatments can be developed that are tailored for the individual. Questions will be taken after the talk.

Said Dr Schofield, a Senior Lecturer who has been recognised for his research by the charity Breast Cancer Campaign: "I was delighted to be asked by the organisers of TechFest-Setpoint to give a talk about cancer.

"I am really looking forward to the evening which I hope will give an interesting insight into a disease which touches so many lives."

Understanding Cancer: Today's Research, Tomorrow's Cures takes place at the University's New Kings in Old Aberdeen. Tickets are priced at £3.50 for adults and £3 concessions and the talk begins at 7.30pm.  The public lecture is part of the KCA Deutag Discovery Series during TechFest in September.
