The latest advancements in stem cell therapy for diabetes will be discussed at a public meeting and conference in Aberdeen later this week.

The Scottish Stem Cell Network has sponsored two events at the University of Aberdeen.

The first, a public meeting, will be held on Wednesday, September 12 in the Polwarth Building lecture theatre at Foresterhill from 4pm to 5.30pm. Anyone who has diabetes, or who has relatives or friends with the disease is encouraged to attend.

The three speakers and their topics are as follows:

Alan Colman, University of Singapore – 'Ten Years On: What Has Dolly Done for Biodmedical Science?

Donald Pearson, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary – 'Diabetes: A Scottish Perspective'

Kevin Docherty, School of Medical Sciences, University of Aberdeen – 'Stem Cell Therapy for Diabetes Mellitus'

International experts will also gather on Thursday, September 13 for a Stem Cells and Diabetes conference at the Institute of Medical Sciences.

Professor Kevin Docherty, the MacLeod-Smith Chair of Biochemistry at theSchool of Medical Sciences, said: "The past few years have seen major breakthroughs in this area of research, including new discoveries in understanding pancreatic development, and the methods of culturing human embryonic stem cells.

"The goal of the public meeting on Wednesday is to describe how diabetes is currently treated and the extent to which advances in stem cell research, and other areas, may bring about a better understanding of the causes of the condition and potential for new therapies.

"The line-up of speakers we have gathered for the conference is also quite outstanding, with highly regarded experts coming from across the world."
