Young land lubbers will swamp Oceans ‘07 today as a reward for winning a contest which challenged school kids to design posters bearing deep sea scenes.
Conference organisers joined forces with TechFest-SetPoint in the competition which asked primary four to seven year olds to design an A3 sheet depicting what they would expect to find while exploring the bottom of the North Sea.
More than 156 pupils from 11 schools across Aberdeen City and the Shire entered the Challenges Under The Sea contest.
But it was the creative talents of pupils at Logie Durno Primary near Inverurie and The Aberdeen School for the Deaf that took top place. Runners-up were entries from Meethill, Mintlaw and Tarves Primary Schools in Aberdeenshire and the city's St Peter's RC Primary School.
Professor John Watson of the University of Aberdeen and Chair of Oceans '07 said: "We had a fantastic response from the school children and were delighted with the high standard of entries they submitted. It was extremely difficult to choose the winning entries as the standard was so high."
Today, (Thursday, June 21), around 20 Logie Durno pupils will tour the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, enjoy a lunch and then take part in a workshop were they will build and then manoeuvre a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) in a workshop staged by Graeme Dunbar from the School of Engineering at The Robert Gordon University.
The pupil with the winning poster from the Aberdeen School for the Deaf was unable to attend Oceans 07 so has received an alternative prize which includes a family pass to Macduff Marine Aquarium.
The primary schools which submitted posters to the competition were Logie Durno; Tarves; Lathallan; Kemnay; Skene Square; Meethill; Aberdeen School for the Deaf; Mintlaw; Victoria Road; St Peter's and Logie Coldstone.

The children arrive at the AECC at 11am and are then taken on hour-long tour before having lunch between 12 noon and 12.30pm. Between 12.30pm and 2pm they will take part in the ROV workshop.
