Volunteers sought for new asthma test

Local GP and University of Aberdeen Clinical Research Fellow Dr Jim Repper is seeking more recruits for a multi-centre clinical trial of a new asthma breath test.

The test measures inflammation levels associated with asthma - this can not only help with diagnosis, but also aid disease management.

The study results may enable more asthma sufferers to get access to this new innovation which may lead to better management of asthma.

Dr Repper, who is a partner at the Elmbank Medical Practice in Aberdeen, is running this trial at the University Research Unit (ACCRU) at the Foresterhill Health Centre.  The trial started in October last year and will run until the summer.

Dr Repper said: "Performing an easy breath test which takes only minutes to do and gives immediate results will enable the doctor to gauge the ongoing inflammation in the airways and thus adjust the inhaled corticosteroid dose accordingly."

Dr Repper and his research team are looking for local people with asthma to help test this device.

Taking part is entirely voluntary and will involve a maximum of three visits to the health centre.  Interested non-smokers who currently have asthma symptoms, which are limiting their activity or keeping them awake at night, should contact research nurses Caroline McNiff on 01224 552785 for more information.

·         The trial is also being held at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and medical centres in Sweden.
