Travellers’ traditions celebrated

An all-day event celebrating the oral and cultural traditions of Scottish travellers will take place in Aberdeen later this week.

Organised by the University of Aberdeen's Elphinstone Institute, 'A Boorach an' a Barrie Nicht', takes place at Marsichal College on Friday, March 30.

Daytime events, from 9.30am to 4.30pm, will include talks, workshops and demonstrations from Scottish experts, including renowned storytellers Stanley Robertson, Sheila Stewart and Jess Smith. These will be followed by a 'Barrie Nicht' of traditional music, song and story-telling from 7pm to 10pm.

"Travelling people have made and continue to make a very important contribution to Scottish culture and tradition," said Dr Ian Russell, Director of the Elphinstone Institute.

"However, all too often the perception of Travellers by mainstream Scottish society is a negative one. By highlighting the richness of their cultural traditions we hope to re-educate a new generation and challenge the kind of damaging stereotype that does a great disservice to Travellers across Scotland."

Registration for the day event is free but must be booked in advance. Meanwhile, tickets for A Barrie Nicht are available by contacting the Elphinstone Institute on (01224) 272996 or by emailing href="mailto:elphinstone@abdn.ac.uk">elphinstone@abdn.ac.uk</a> Further information is available at www.abdn.ac.uk/elphinstone
