Moderator of the Church of Scotland visits Aberdeen for legal conference

The Moderator of the Church of Scotland, Rt. Rev Alan D. McDonald, will join with a group of distinguished scholars from the legal sector this week, as the University of Aberdeen holds a two-day conference.

The Rt Rev McDonald will deliver a talk on Friday (November 3), entitled The Place of Religion in the Scottish Public Sphere. The presentation forms part of a workshop organised by the University’s School of Law.

Aberdeen academics will also play a prominent role in the event including recently-appointed Professor Anthony Carty who joined the University’s School of Law earlier this year. Professor Carty is one of the world’s leading specialists in British policy and international law. His distinguished career boasts eminent positions in leading universities across the globe including chair appointments in Berlin, Paris, Tokyo, and Madrid. He holds membership in the major, global research boards and societies for International Law and Human Rights.

The conference also welcomes eminent scholar, Oliver O’Donovan, who is Professor of Christian Ethics and Practical Theology at Edinburgh University. Friday’s talks, which run from 10am – 6pm, are being held in the Society of Advocates, Advocates Hall Concert Court, Aberdeen.

On Saturday (November 4), the conference continues with a range of speakers focusing on science and religion, and liberalism and religion. The event runs from 10am – 2pm in the James McKay Hall at King’s College, Old Aberdeen.
