Marischal Museum unveils top quality line-up for evening lecture series

A host of nationally and internationally renowned experts in archaeology, history, art and folk life will entertain North-east audiences as Marischal Museum’s evening lectures continue this term.

The Marischal Museum evening lecture series for 2006/2007 continues next week with a talk by Timothy Neat on Tuesday (October 31) entitled From the Bridge of Cally to the Bridge of Don.

The lectures are organised in conjunction with a range of specialist organisations to ensure a wide range of quality speakers. As in previous years, organisations include the University of Aberdeen’s Marischal Museum and Elphinstone Institute, along with the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and Egyptology Scotland.

After the success of its debut lecture last year, Marischal welcomes the return of the Aberdeen Scottish Hellenic Lecture when Professor Elizabeth Moignard, of the University of Glasgow, will talk on Drinks fit for heroes: Aberdeen’s Greek vases.

The Egyptology Scotland lecture will take place on Tuesday, November 21, with a talk by Professor Ken Kitchen, of the University of Liverpool, on Foreigners in Egypt and Egyptians Abroad.

Lectures from January – May 2007 cover a variety of topics including a focus on the bone collections at Marischal Museum with Dr Meg Hutchison of the University of Aberdeen; the Viking age impacts in the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland; and The Archaeology of Magic in Later Medieval Burials.

The lectures are open to all and, until January 2007, will be held in Marischal Museum at 7.30pm every Tuesday. As from January 2007, the lectures will be held in New King’s, Old Aberdeen, every Tuesday evening.

Further information is available by contacting the museum on (01224) 274301 or log on to the website to view the full list of lectures at www.abdn.ac.uk/marischalmuseum
