Aberdeen welcomes overseas law student in scholarship scheme

The University of Aberdeen is hosting a year-long visit from a talented law student from China as part of an international scholarship scheme.

32-year-old Han Rui, from the Chinese Central Police Authority, arrived in Aberdeen in September to begin a one-year LLM programme (Master of Laws). The initiative is part of the Scottish International Scholarship Programme which is open to talented young people from China, India, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand or Singapore who would like to study for a Masters in Scotland.

A total of 21 scholars from these six countries are taking part in the initiative, which is funded by the Scottish Executive and managed by the British Council. The scheme is aimed at graduates in science, technology and creative industries.

Jenny Fernandes, Head of the International Office at the University of Aberdeen, said she was delighted to be welcoming Han Rui to Aberdeen. She said: “We look forward to working with Han Rui over the coming year. The competition for the scholarships was extremely tough so to be awarded a Scotland scholarship is an excellent achievement.”

Han Rui said there were numerous reasons why he chose to come and study in Aberdeen. He said: “As one of the UK’s oldest universities, Aberdeen attracted me for its traditional qualities.

“I am looking forward to benefiting from Aberdeen’s 500 years’ experience in the teaching of law. I will treat my study in the Law School at Aberdeen as a new achievement in my career.”

The School of Law at the University has recently been ranked first in Scotland and fifth in the UK by the Times Good University Guide.

Professor Paul Beaumont, Head of the School of Law, said: “The University of Aberdeen School of Law has been in business for over 500 years and has been running successful LLM programmes for over 20 years.

“It is great that the academic excellence of our programmes is being recognised by this prestigious new Scottish Scholarship being awarded to a student coming to do an LLM at the University of Aberdeen.”

Minister for Finance and Public Service Reform, Tom McCabe, said: “There is absolutely no doubt that Scotland has a great deal to offer international students - a first-class education, a great quality of life, exciting cities and breathtaking countryside.

“These 21 students are outstanding graduates in their fields and Scotland will give them the opportunity to develop their talents further. The Scottish education sector is renowned the world over and these scholars will have the opportunity to learn from the some of the very best in their fields.”

The University’s research excellence has allowed it to secure its position as a leading research-led institution and influence global issues, attracting some of the world’s most distinguished scholars and reinforcing its own academic strengths. An increasing number of Chinese students are attracted to the University and, currently, they make up nearly a quarter of the institution’s international student population.

The University’s International Office is a part of the Student Recruitment & Admissions Service (SRAS) who are an experienced and friendly team, ready to tell prospective students everything they want to know about studying at the University. The International Office has a worldwide network of carefully chosen agents who talk to prospective students about higher education in general and offer help with any visa issues students may have.
