Studentships up for grabs at Aberdeen

Studentships up for grabs at Aberdeen

The high quality of teaching in Public Health at the University of Aberdeen has been recognised once again by a prestigious funding body.

Only 15 institutions in the UK were granted funding from the MRC and Aberdeen was one of just two Scottish universities to receive two scholarships.

The funding will support two students at Aberdeen through the 2006-2007 MSc in Health Services and Public Health Research course. This covers their fees and £12,300 living expenses during this one-year of study.

Welcoming the funding, Dr. Edwin van Teijlingen, Reader in Public Health, said: “This year the studentships were awarded to UK universities by competition. This competition was oversubscribed two-fold which makes it all the more prestigious for the University of Aberdeen to have been awarded two scholarships.

“It is an indication that Aberdeen is seen as one of the top institutions in the field of Public Health.”

The MSc in Health Services and Public Health Research course provides training in health services, health economics and public health research. Students will cover the design and conduct of health service and public health research projects. They will also learn to understand the main issues and constraints in achieving evidence based health care and public health strategies.

Dr van Teijlingen added: “There is still a high demand for good researchers in the health services and health care field. University of Aberdeen MSc graduates find it relatively easy to find employment in research, health care management or public practice.

“These two annual studentships offer a significant opportunity and are awarded to potential students on academic merit.

“We would encourage undergraduate students with an interest in public health, health service research and/or health economics, to apply now.”

The closing date for applications is June 19. For further information, please contact Dr Edwin R van Teijlingen, University of Aberdeen Medical School, tel: (01224) 552495, fax: (01224) 550925, or email: van.teijlingen@abdn.ac.uk
