North-east pupils get helping hand with classes over Easter

Almost 90 pupils from North-East secondary schools are getting a helping hand with their studying this Easter from the University of Aberdeen.

For the fifth year running, the University is hosting a two-day Easter Revision School today and tomorrow (April 3 and 4), for local Standard Grade pupils.

The event has been organised by the University's aim 4 uni - a programme which works to encourage wider access to higher education.

Pupils from Northfield, Torry, Kincorth, St Machar, Peterhead, Portlethen and Bankhead Academies, will take part in activities designed to support their Standard Grade revision in Mathematics and English. Support will also be provided for pupils sitting alternative exams such as the Intermediate 1 and 2 in English and Maths.

Activities will include revision workshop sessions, study skills and fun activities around Maths and English. Teachers from most of the target schools will teach at the event and will be supported by a combination of student assistants who are currently completing the PGDE(S) in the relevant subject, as well as students who have been volunteering on the Grampian Student Tutoring Scheme.

While the main aim of the event is to improve pupils' Standard Grade achievements in Maths and English, they will also gain the opportunity to experience a taste of the university environment and student life.

Seema Miah, aim 4 uni Project Officer and Event Organiser, said: "The Easter Revision School is one of a range of events that the University of Aberdeen's aim 4 uni scheme supports for young people in schools and we are delighted to have pupils from both Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire attending.

"This is the fifth year that the event has been organised by the University of Aberdeen. It is proving to be an increasingly popular choice of revision activity for many young people and we are really pleased at the numbers attending this year.

"We have had strong support from the schools, teachers, University staff and students involved and look forward to being able to offer an extended event next year.

"Supporting young people in achieving better grades and providing the opportunity to come into a university is one way of encouraging them to view University study as an option for their future. We want to ensure that young people have choices and see themselves as having choices to study at higher levels. Events like the Easter Revision School reinforce this widening access message."

During the programme pupils will have the chance to win prizes and all participants will receive a certificate and an Easter egg at the end of the Easter Revision School.
