University of Aberdeen welcomes £76m SFC funding

The University of Aberdeen welcomes the announcement by the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) that the Institution is to receive more than £76million in 2006/07 – a 6.9% increase over last year - towards its teaching and research activities.

The funding is part of the SFC’s £962 million allocation for teaching and research in 2006/07, across Scotland.

Professor Stephen Logan, the University’s Senior Vice-Principal, is pleased that Aberdeen has been so well supported in this latest funding round.

Welcoming the increase, he said: “This is a boost to all of our high quality activities and it will benefit our teaching and learning and enhance our ability to support international quality research.

“However, we note that 3.1% of our increase is ring-fenced as a contribution to the implementation of the human resource modernisation agenda.

“We particularly welcome our 12% increase in research funding which includes a 17% increase in our Knowledge Transfer Grant which recognises our success in commercialisation activities such as new company formations, licensing, and links with industry, particularly small and medium enterprises.”

Professor Logan added: “Receiving this particular level of funding clearly demonstrates that the quality of research at the University of Aberdeen is being recognised in the best possible way. It will enable us to develop commercialisation opportunities in Scotland and to continue to contribute to the local, regional and national economies.”
