AAPG President to speak to University of Aberdeen students

The President of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists is visiting the University of Aberdeen on March 9 and 10, with plans to present a variety of lectures to students as well as meeting with the University’s Principal and Vice Chancellor, Professor C Duncan Rice, and representatives of Aberdeen’s new/independent oil companies.

Dr Pete Rose is a licensed petroleum geologist who has many years of experience in the industry. He started his career as a Staff Geologist with Shell after studying at the University of Texas and in 1980 established his own independent oil and gas company, Telegraph Exploration, Inc, whose clients included most of the major US companies as well as international firms and state companies.

He founded and was Managing Partner of Rose and Associates L.L.P in 1998, of which he is now Senior Associate. The organisation was recognised as the leading consultant firm specialising in exploration and production analysis as well as providing teaching, consulting and proprietary software services to E&P companies around the world.

Dr Rose will be accompanied on his visit by John Brooks who used to be Head Licensing for DTI (now retired) and is European Region AAPG President.

There will be opportunities throughout the two-day visit for students to meet and talk to the experts, as well as taking part in workshops and attending lectures and presentations. Dr Rose and Mr Brooks will meet with students from the MSc Petroleum Geology and Hydrocarbon Enterprise classes and will present lectures to undergraduates.

Dr Andrew Hurst, Professor of Production Geoscience, at the University is delighted that someone of Dr Rose’s calibre is visiting the University to meet senior colleagues and students. He said: "The University and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists have strong links, formed over many years of supporting each other to enhance the profile of science across the globe.

“I am pleased that the University is able to further assist the AAPG and jointly promote the understanding and development of geology to a wider audience."

The American Association of Petroleum Geologists published Dr Rose’s book “Risk Analysis and Management of Petroleum Exploration Ventures”. Other publications include “The Business Side of Geology” and a monthly column in the AAPG magazine. He has also taught at a professional level and has lectured on many areas including resource assessment, risk and uncertainty in exploration and ethics in geoscience.

Dr Rose was awarded AAPG Honorary Membership in 2002 and also received the coveted Parker Memorial Medal from the American Institute of Professional Geologists in 1998.
