University to open its doors to hundreds of potential MA students

Hundreds of people from all over the UK and abroad will visit Aberdeen next month to sample the city’s educational and social culture when the University’s sixth annual Master of Arts (MA) Applicant Day is held.

Upwards of 700 students and parents are expected to arrive at the University’s King’s College campus on Wednesday, March 8, to find out more about the broad range of MA courses available at the University of Aberdeen and to get a taster of student life in the Granite City.

The aim of the popular MA Applicant Day is to enable the University to showcase its facilities and to prove its worth as one of the UK’s most internationally distinguished universities to an audience of potential students and their parents.

Visitors on the day will come from all over the UK and Ireland, as well as from other parts of Europe. There will also be some guests from the US.

They will enjoy the activity-filled day of guided tours, workshops, subject presentations, and talks on a range of subjects including: Student Funding, Careers, and Student Support and Accommodation. There will also be more than 100 students staying overnight in Aberdeen who will enjoy a special welcome reception on the evening preceding the MA Applicant Day.

Professor Trevor Salmon, Director of Teaching and Learning for the College of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Aberdeen, who is co-organising the event, said: “We are delighted by the number of potential students and parents who have accepted our invitation to attend the MA Applicant Day.

“Our students have a wide and varied choice about what they study in their first two years and many end up graduating in subjects they hadn’t previously considered, so having the chance to visit the University is a great chance to find out more about what we have to offer.

“The broad and flexible MA degree at Aberdeen continues to be attractive to prospective students from all over the world.”

On the morning of the MA Applicant Day, students will be welcomed to the University by Professor Salmon who will talk about student life on campus and about the structure of the MA degree. Students will then visit the Elphinstone Hall where more than 30 information stands will be set up for all the MA departments. Academic staff will be on hand to answer any questions and to chat with students and their parents.

The University of Aberdeen is at the forefront in many areas of arts and social sciences and has experienced a steady increase in applications to the Master of Arts (MA) Programme in recent years. It’s the third oldest university in Scotland and the fifth oldest in the UK. Last year, it celebrated its 500th anniversary of teaching and learning at King’s College.

Professor Salmon added: “Aberdeen is such a distinctive city, which is big enough to provide all the advantages of city life, yet compact and friendly enough to enjoy the more intimate atmosphere usually associated with small towns.

“King’s College still offers a sense of history in the daily life of a university, although we are now focussed on the needs of the new millennium.”
