Exploring the history of the Gospels

Exploring the history of the Gospels

One of the world’s leading biblical scholars will visit the University of Aberdeen next week to deliver a series of prestigious divinity lectures.

Richard Bauckham, Professor of New Testament at the University of St Andrews, will present the 2006 Scottish Journal of Theology Lectures on Monday and Tuesday, February 13 and 14, and Thursday and Friday, February 16 and 17.

In his lecture series on ‘The Gospels as History’, Professor Bauckham will ask what it means to speak of the Gospels as history and of Jesus as a historical figure.

Dr Simon Gathercole, Senior Lecturer in New Testament at the University of Aberdeen, said: “We are delighted to welcome a scholar of Richard Bauckham’s stature to the University to deliver the Scottish Journal of Theology Lectures.

“Richard Bauckham is not only one of the world's leading New Testament scholars, but a polymath of a kind which is almost unknown these days. His extensive knowledge of early Judaism, New Testament studies, historical theology and contemporary doctrine -- combined with his superb judgment - mean that these lectures are sure to be groundbreaking.

“We would encourage anyone, whether they have an academic or general interest in theology, to join us for this event.”

Professor Bauckham is a Fellow of the British Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He is currently working on his latest book, Jesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony.

The lectures, which are all admission free, will begin at 1.00pm in the Court Room in the University Office.

Further information on the lectures is available by contacting Dr Donald Wood on (01224) 272620 or at d.wood@abdn.ac.uk.

The Scottish Journal of Theology Lectures are held annually at the University of Aberdeen.

Established in 1948, the Scottish Journal of Theology is one of the world’s most influential theological journals. It provides an ecumenical forum for debate and engages in reviews of theological and biblical literature.
