Two of the University of Aberdeen’s most gifted music scholars were awarded a prestigious prize for their talents at a special ceremony last week.
Paul Tierney (21) and George Chittenden (22), who both live in Aberdeen, were awarded the inaugural Ogston Prize in Music Making at a ceremony last Wednesday (December 7).
The students were presented with commemorative quaichs and a cash prize by Aberdeen graduate Professor Derek Ogston.
The award of the Ogston Prize in Music Making is based on past performance in music within the University and on an audition held at the beginning of the new academic year.
The prize is to be awarded annually to a promising musician who is making an outstanding contribution to University Music.
Dr Roger Williams, Director of University Music, said: “I am delighted with this prize which is such an encouragement to our students in their musical activities both within the University and the City of Aberdeen.”
Singer Paul Tierney is currently in his fourth year of a BMus (Bachelor of Music) course, while organist George Chittenden, is in his final year of a MA (History) with Music Studies.
Last Wednesday’s ceremony coincided with one of University Music’s popular Teatime Recitals featuring Paul as the New Music Group Conductor.
