New year brings new horizons for potential students

The University of Aberdeen is appealing to those people who are perhaps in full-time careers, or who have recently graduated and not yet moved in to full time work by offering over 20 new and innovative postgraduate one year masters programmes.

These programmes are split across the three colleges: College of Arts and Social Sciences; College of Life Sciences and Medicine; and College of Physical Sciences, and all start at the end of January 2006.

Clare Sender, Head of Student Recruitment and Admissions Service (SRAS), said: “The University is internationally renowned for the quality of its teaching and research, and we would urge potential postgraduate students to get in touch with us now to register their interest in any of our new and existing programmes.

“Aberdeen offers 90 different one-year Masters programmes, and opportunities for Research Degrees, Postgraduate Taught Programmes and part-time study are also available across the three Colleges.”

In the College of Arts and Social Sciences, there are 14 postgraduate law programmes aimed at law scholars, legal professionals, as well as students who have graduated in another discipline. The Masters in International Business Law, is being offered by distance learning only therefore providing a much wider range of people, from all over the world, the tools to further their legal study without having to physically attend lectures in Aberdeen.

In the Business School, there are three one-year postgraduate programmes beginning on January 30, 2006 which will provide key skills in the current economic climate. These include MLitt Strategic Studies; MLitt Middle East Security; and MBA (Business Administration). The long-established MLitt Strategic Studies is a course of high reputation which covers strategic theory, European Security, and Global Security Issues. The Middle East Security course covers Arab-Israeli Relations, Religion, Governance and Conflict, and Gulf and Caspian Security. The MBA gives a good all round grounding in issues related to all business activity.

In the College of Life Sciences and Medicine, new programmes starting in January include: MSc Research Technologies and MSc Molecular & Cellular Immunology. The MSc Research Technologies will offer an extensive range of generic and specialised skills that are in demand in the medicine and biomedical research sector, including marketing, consultancy, teaching, general management, and intellectual property.

In the College of Physical Sciences, students can sign up now to start in January on the Pg Diploma in Geospatial Information Systems; Pg Diploma in Information Systems; and MSc in Project Management. The Pg Dip Geospatial Information Systems is a new geology-based course offering a blend of computing science covering key aspects of geospatial technology, such as Java Programming and Web Technologies.

The MSc Project Management is based at the King’s College campus, but thanks to the distance-learning arm of the course, it now has students studying in all parts of the world, from Scotland to New Zealand, from Africa to Mexico. When the course first started 12 years ago, its main supply of students came from the North Sea Oil and Gas Industry where project management techniques were at the forefront in that developing industry, however, it teaches generic skills, and can be applied to any industry.

The University is also offering bursaries of £1500 on selected programmes.
