University to host international coastal GIS conference

There is growing interest worldwide in coastal and marine environments and the desire to manage our resources more effectively, more efficiently, and in a more sustainable way. These are truly exciting times, and one of the reasons why the sixth international CoastGIS 2005 symposium is being held later this week in Aberdeen.

The University of Aberdeen, through the College of Physical Sciences, in partnership with the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC), will host this prestigious event, to be held at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre (AECC) - July 21-23.

CoastGIS 2005 is the sixth International Symposium on GIS and Computer Cartography for Coastal Zone Management and will be the second CoastGIS Symposium to be held in the city.

As a major event, the CoastGIS series attracts an international audience of coastal researchers, managers and practitioners who use one or more of the geospatial technologies. The symposium will be of interest and is open to all academic, commercial, and Government individuals, as well as technologists, scientists and social scientists, policy makers, coastal managers, coastal practitioners, environmental consultants, and educators – anyone with an interest in coastal and marine environments.

David R. Green, CoastGIS 2005 Conference and Exhibition Chairman, and Lecturer, School of Geography & Environment, University of Aberdeen, is looking forward to welcoming delegates to the symposium.

He said: “Aberdeen is an ideal location for CoastGIS 2005 with its long coastal and maritime history, most notably the fishing industry and more recently as the oil capital of Europe. Today coastal and marine research is a major activity of universities, research institutions, companies, consultancies and government agencies located both in and around Aberdeen city.

“As always this event promises to be a very rewarding experience and on behalf of the CoastGIS Committee we are looking forward to welcoming attendees to Aberdeen.”

Following on from CoastGIS 2003 in Genoa, CoastGIS 2005 seeks to build upon the overall theme of CoastGIS 2003 and the conclusions arising from the final plenary session.

Involved in the opening plenary at this week’s symposium will be David R. Green, Chairman CoastGIS 2005 Symposium and Exhibition; Professor David Macdonald, Head of School of Geosciences, University of Aberdeen; and Professor William Ritchie, Director, Aberdeen Institute for Coastal Science & Management, University of Aberdeen.

Topics included in the programme range from information systems, to integrating information; from climate change, to environmental monitoring; from coastal zone management and coastal planning, to risk mapping and geohazards, to name but a few. Workshops are also included throughout the symposium programme.

The event is open to anyone with an interest in coastal and marine environments, so don’t miss out! Book your place at the symposium online by visiting: www.coastgis2005.org.uk/registration.htm
