Chemistry at Work 2005

Chemistry at Work 2005

Over 750 secondary school pupils from across the North-east and Morayshire will be attending a Chemistry at Work event at the University of Aberdeen this week.

The event, organised by SETPOINT Scotland North, takes place today (Tuesday, June 7), tomorrow (Wednesday, June 8), and Thursday (June 9), at the University of Aberdeen Chemistry Department.

Third year Chemistry pupils from schools in Moray, Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City will attend a series of 20-minute presentations from such diverse organisations as FRS Marine Laboratory, MacPhie of Glenbervie, and Grampian Fire & Rescue Service. Many of the presentations contain an element of practical work for pupils to get involved in.

Presentation topics include Why Chemistry is Fun, and The Forensic Examination of a Crime Scene.

The aim of Chemistry at Work is to enrich the learning experience of pupils following chemistry courses by providing experience of real applications of the subject in the world beyond school.

It is hoped the event will provide encouragement to pupils to continue studying chemistry while at school, and to consider continuing with chemistry at tertiary education and beyond.

Fiona Noble, Chemistry at Work co-ordinator, said: “Chemistry is a continually evolving subject, and to reflect this each year we try ensure that all pupils attending see as wide a range of presentations as possible”.

The first presentation of the day begins at 9.30am with the last presentation finishing at 3.30pm.
