Almost 40 physics teachers from secondary schools from the length and breadth of Scotland are gathering at the University of Aberdeen today to enhance their teaching skills.
They are attending a course which will focus on the fundamental ideas of mechanics relevant to Advanced Higher Physics and areas of related topical interest. Three lecture sessions will cover the topics of Chaos, Special Relativity and General Relativity and the Universe at Large.
The programme also includes a hands-on laboratory session for teachers, focussing on topics relevant to rotational dynamics that can be passed on to pupils.
Dr John Reid, Head of Physics at the University, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Advanced Higher physics teachers from across Scotland and put our expertise at their disposal.
"Physics is an important subject in modern society. Good continuity in teaching between schools and the University will help to make it a more attractive option for pupils.”
The event, which has been sponsored by the Institute of Physics, is the first on the subject of Mechanics and the latest in a series of Continuing Professional Development days staged for secondary teachers by the University.
The sessions are designed to increase teachers’ confidence in delivering their subject in the classroom. They are also viewed as a good networking opportunity.
