Perfect 10 for Aberdeen?

Perfect 10 for Aberdeen?

With less than a week to go before the 10th annual Aberdeen Asset Management City of Aberdeen Universities Boat Race, both crews are now in full training ahead of Saturday’s battle on the River Dee.

The race, which starts at 3 pm, will see Robert Gordon University attempt to stop Aberdeen University from making it a clean sweep with the latter having come up trumps every year since the event’s inception in 1996.

The universities have named their squads for the 10th annual Aberdeen Asset Management City of Aberdeen Universities Boat Race, to be staged on the River Dee this Saturday (March 12).

Sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management, the Aberdeen race is the longest running Universities’ Boat Race North of the border and over the last few years has established itself as Scotland’s perfect answer to the Boat Race.

The crews are seen here taking a break from training: University of Aberdeen – (from front left going clockwise) – David Watt (cox), Elizabeth Macintosh, Jill Beck, Iain Murray, Elizabeth Crighton, Lynne Jamieson, Peter Shannon, Colin Williamson, Alan Sinclair.

Robert Gordon University (from front right going anti-clockwise Fiona Birnie (cox), Alex Gemie, Judith Herbert, Emma Fisher, Patrick Lehane, Colin Wallace, Stuart Armstrong, Scott Purdie. (crew member Megan Munro not in photo).

Having yet to triumph in the previous nine races, the RGU crew is determined to utilise the milestone tenth outing as the scene of what would be an historic victory.

Andrew Laing, Chief Operating Officer with Aberdeen Asset Management has been involved in the planning and organisation of the race. He said: “Aberdeen Asset Management has become somewhat synonymous with rowing over the past few years and this is the fifth time we have supported the Aberdeen race. In that time we have seen not only the popularity of the race increase but also of rowing in our area and are delighted to have played a role in that.”
