University Symphony Orchestra concert welcomes talented local musicians

Two talented Aberdonian musicians will perform at the University of Aberdeen’s acclaimed Symphony Orchestra Concert, which will be held on Monday, March 7.

Solo pianist Joseph Long and conductor Lisa Nicol will be joined by orchestra leader Bryan Dargie and conductor Dr Roger Williams, Director of Music at the University of Aberdeen.

The University Symphony Orchestra is the largest orchestra in Aberdeen and its repertoire is drawn from the 18th to 20th centuries. Formed earlier last century, the Orchestra is truly a mixture of town and gown, with students and staff of the University playing alongside local teachers, professional and amateur players form the City and the region.

Next Monday’s concert will feature music by Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini; Varèse: Ionisation for 13 percussion players; and Beethoven’s Symphony no.5 in c minor.

Dr Williams said: ”It is always a joy and a privilege to conduct the University Symphony Orchestra. The range of expertise, talents and interests represented are quite amazing, and the corporate musical curiosity feeds through to performances which are lively and vibrant.

“To work with the enormously talented pianist Joseph Long will be very exciting. As part of our survey of important 20th century musical masterpieces, Ionisation will be receiving a rare performance which I am delighted Lisa Nicol will conduct.

“March 7th promises to be a most important musical event in the Aberdeen calendar.”

The University Symphony Orchestra concert begins at 7.30pm in the Music Hall. Tickets costs £10 and £7.50 (Concessions £7.50 and £5) and are available at Aberdeen Box Office on (01224) 641122, or online at www.musichallaberdeen.com
