University unveils plans for major renovation project

Staff and students at the University of Aberdeen are set to benefit from a huge-scale renovation project to develop and enhance catering and leisure facilities at King’s College campus.

The University has this week unveiled major proposals to refurbish the Central Refectory building over an 18-month period. When the building, on Elphinstone Road, Old Aberdeen, re-opens in September 2006, it will boast a range of services such as dining facilities, retail, and drop-in centres, including the Aberdeen University Students Association (AUSA) offices. Elements of the Student Affairs Directorate including the Student Advice and Support Office, Careers and Appointments, Student Accommodation Office, and Campus Services, will also be housed in the new centre.

Senior Vice Principal Professor Stephen Logan said: “This project is a major milestone for the University of Aberdeen as it demonstrates our commitment to providing students with top-class facilities at a central location at King’s College, while enhancing our quality dining facilities and professional meeting points for staff.”

During the closure period, from March 2005 until September 2006, staff and students will be encouraged to utilise existing catering outlets and to make use of alternative facilities, such as the extensive dining facilities at Crombie’s neighbouring amenity - the Johnston Hall Dining Room. This facility will serve as the dining area catering for staff and students currently using the Central Refectory building.

University Secretary Steve Cannon said: “We are very excited about this project which will culminate in a flagship venue designed in partnership with our staff and students providing first class facilities for all members of the University and the local community.”
